Personal development is fundamental to our investment in our staff, with training and opportunities to progress at all stages of their careers across the organisation. We encourage all staff to develop their knowledge and skills to deliver the high standard of care and service to meet the needs of our communities.
We have training and conference facilities at our learning and development centres in Ealing and at Broadmoor Hospital.
We offer courses and programmes to develop clinical staff.
Courses include in-house cognitive behavioural therapy training and a preceptorship scheme for newly qualified nurses and occupational therapists.
We provide supervision for all our clinical staff, supported by a range of relevant training courses.
Leadership at the Trust takes many forms, from co-ordinating the critical elements of patient care, to setting direction and strategy and maintaining morale during times of crisis, such as the Covid-19 pandemic.
Accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management, we support leaders with in-house leadership and management development and mentoring programmes.
Aimed at band 5 staff nurses who want to develop the skills and knowledge needed to move into clinical leader positions, this programme has been created for clinical inpatient and or community staff working towards a clinical band 6 role, and for newly appointed staff in within a clinical band 6 role.
This programme aims to:
- Increase staff confidence in building and leading effective clinical teams
- Develop leadership skills and a greater understanding of the role of a clinical leader and the value of this role
- Improve clinical decision making skills
- Develop practical interview and presentation skills.
Managers provide active support throughout the programme, ensuring participants have the opportunity to use and embed what they’ve learnt when they’re back on the ward or in the community.
We want to increase the number of black and minority ethnic (BAME) staff in senior management by 10% over the next three years.
The BAME leadership programme is designed to build confidence, resilience and enable BAME staff to raise their profile in the Trust. It builds leadership strengths by giving people the personal tools they need to improve their performance and develop their careers.
The programme includes:
- 360 feedback reports on leadership capabilities
- Myers Brigg psychometric tests
- Observed group exercises
- Confidence and resilience building exercises
- Career planning sessions
- Interview and presentation skills training
- Inspirational motivational speakers
- Coaching and mentoring mentors
Our BAME leadership programme won a Healthcare People Management Association (HPMA) award in 2018.
Our 6-day Lead by Example programme supports the development of our managers’ leadership and confidence, equipping them with the skills they need, including in engaging staff and improving retention.
2 Hours 2 Learn is a series of workshops focusing on key management and leadership issues. These 2-hour sessions aim to keep managers up to speed with the latest professional strategies and practices.
We use 360 degree feedback so that staff have views and evaluation of their performance from a range of different people with whom they work. This may include their line manager, those who report to them, other colleagues, service users and stakeholders.
