The Trust is delighted to report that Broadmoor Hospital, has retained its overall rating of ‘Good’ following an inspection undertaken in March. The hospital has also retained its outstanding rating for being ‘Caring’, and ‘Good’ ratings for being ‘Effective’, ‘Responsive’ and ‘Well-led’.
The latest inspection found patients received high standards of care, were treated with compassion and kindness, and received tailored care and treatment.
Patients reported feeling respected and valued as individuals and were empowered as partners in their care.
Of the leadership, inspectors concluded that Broadmoor Hospital Leaders had managed to minimise the impact of COVID-19 for patients, and outbreaks were well-contained. They were also praised for successfully managing the move to a new modern facility from a building that was unfit for purpose.
Hospital leaders had also reduced the effect of national staffing shortages on the care provided to their patients, although this remains a risk and was a factor in the hospital being rated ‘Requires improvement’ in the category of ‘Safety’.
Jane Ray, CQC’s head of inspection for mental health and community services, said:
“Patients spoke highly of the care and support they received. They had many opportunities to express their views and to get involved in the development of the service.
“We found leaders had successfully managed moving from a building that was unfit for purpose to an excellent new facility.
“However, there are some issues the hospital should address, including recruiting more registered staff members.
“The hospital should also ensure all ligature risks are fully mitigated to ensure patients are protected from all risks of avoidable harm.
“We continue to monitor the hospital closely. We will inspect it again to assess whether standards have been maintained or further improvements made.”

“We were delighted to retain our ‘Outstanding’ rating for caring and to see so many good areas of practice noted by the inspectors.
“It has been a very challenging few years and we have also moved our services to a completely new facility. I am immensely grateful to all of our staff who have continued to work so hard to maintain our high standards of care, particularly during the COVID-19 crisis and with high vacancy rates for registered nurses.
“We are always very open to visits by the CQC and welcome their feedback and report. We recognise that there are areas for improvement and we are working hard to address vacancy levels in line with other areas of the NHS amongst the other areas of improvement highlighted."

Other positive feedback noted was the open and inclusive culture at the hospital, safeguarding work to protect patients, cleanliness and infection prevention standards and the skills and experience of managers working in the hospital.
Areas of improvement will now be the focus of the hospital, including minimising risk of ligature, care planning and gaps in training.
